How to Properly Select Wire Rope Cleaner & Lubricator Kit?
I. Basic Information Required for Wire Ropes
- Source of on-site equipment lubrication system (none, technically modified new addition);
- On-site lubrication method (manual periodic lubrication, semi-automatic lubrication with controller, fully automatic lubrication with control system);
- Model and brand of on-site lubricating grease;
- Type of pump used in the on-site lubrication system (pneumatic pump, electric pump);
- Length and diameter of the wire rope requiring lubrication;
- Number of outer strands and lay direction of the wire rope;
- Current condition of the wire rope (presence of burrs, broken strands, rough surface rust, smooth without broken strands);
- Maximum and minimum operating speeds of each wire rope;
- Application scenario of the wire rope;
- Maximum and minimum operating speeds of each wire rope If pneumatic oil supply is required, what is the stable air pressure at the site?
II. Basic Parameters and Measurement Methods for Wire Ropes
- In order to clean and lubricate the steel wire rope more effectively, firstly, the diameter of the steel wire rope needs to be measured accurately in a correct way (see the figure below), so as to select the appropriate wire rope clamp and sealer.
- Observe the lay direction of the wire rope, which is typically one of four types: right regular lay, left regular lay, right lang lay, and left lang lay (see illustration below)
- Measure the lay length (H) of the wire rope: the distance (H) between two corresponding points parallel to the wire rope axis after one complete rotation (or helix) of the outer steel wires of a single-strand wire rope, outer strands of a multi-strand wire rope, or unit wire ropes of a cable-type wire rope around the wire rope axis.

III. Specifications of Wire Rope Clamps
- Light Duty, Model VWL: Suitable for wire rope outer diameter 8~32mm
- Medium Duty, Model VWM: Suitable for wire rope outer diameter 34~60mm
- Heavy Duty, Model VWH: Suitable for wire rope outer diameter 62~80mm
[Note]: If the outer diameter of the wire rope exceeds the listed specifications, the wire rope clamp and cleaner need to be specially customized.
